Health Partner Investment Action Lab

In 2021, NeighborWorks America launched the Health Partner Investment Action Lab (HPIAL) as part of a longstanding set of capacity building opportunities to help their network organizations better understand how health institutions approach upstream investment in affordable housing. In partnership with the Center for Community Investment, network organizations receive funding, training, one-on-one coaching, and other capacity building support to explore this newer capital source as they seek to improve the health and wellbeing of their communities by increasing affordable housing.

Helping community development organizations partner with health institutions on upstream investments in affordable housing.

When health institutions and community development and affordable housing professionals partner to invest in community conditions, they can move their work to the level of systemic inequity. Investment is critical to long-term, sustainable, community-centered change at the root cause level–which will in turn produce the changes in community conditions and health outcomes that both sectors ultimately seek.

Healthy Homes & Communities

HPIAL has supported 14 NeighborWorks organizations across two cohorts to develop health sector partnerships that advance housing priorities in their communities, while developing a toolkit and other resources to bring their learnings to others in the field.

HPIAL was launched to help network organizations understand health partner capital investment as part of capacity building opportunities.

CCI’s Accelerating Investments for Healthy Communities laid the foundation for investments in affordable housing.

The social and economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2020 racial justice uprisings fall most heavily on disinvested communities.

A mindset shift shows what motivates health systems, how to understand their operations, and what kinds of work to do together to support community transformation without reproducing past harms.

Leaders seek to build sustainable, deep partnerships with health partners to address systemic inequities in disinvested communities.

Each team that participates leaves with an action plan.

From Silos to Collaborations
